This service addresses a critical gap in the care of patients with autonomic nervous system dysfunction, offering a comprehensive and systematic evaluation for:
Tests performed include: • 10-minute standing test • Heart rate variability with deep breathing • Valsalva manoeuvre • Sustained handgrip test
We offer: • CAFT-only referrals for diagnostic testing • MAP Clinic referrals for full physician review, interpretation, and long-term management

Dr. Issam Muteir is a Consultant Physician with extensive experience in managing complex general medical and cardiovascular conditions, including a special interest in autonomic cardiovascular dysfunction. He currently consults at My Heart Cardiology.
Dr. Muteir is the founder of Cardiovascular Autonomic Function Testing (CAFT) and the MAP Clinic (Medical Assessment of Postural Intolerance & Syncope)—among only a few similar clinics in Australia. These services provide structured, physician-led evaluation for conditions such as POTS, orthostatic intolerance, unexplained syncope, and post-COVID autonomic syndromes.
He also welcomes referrals for general cardiology and complex internal medicine presentations.
Training & Background Dr. Muteir graduated in 2000 and completed his initial physician training. He began his career at Charles Sturt University, conducting research in cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy and teaching as an Associate Lecturer in community health.
He went on to complete specialist training in General and Acute Medicine through Western Health and Monash Health.
His leadership roles include: • Clinical Lead, General Medicine (2018–2022) • Director of Physician Training (current) • Co-Director, Baw Baw Physicians (current)
He holds a Master of Medicine in Clinical Epidemiology from the University of Sydney and is the author of two books, Rebel Doctor and Leaping the Hurdles, reflecting his advocacy for ethical practice and reform in medicine.
